Recurrent awakenings or insomnia
People with significant sleep apnoea have an increased risk of motor vehicle accidents and high blood pressure, and may have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. If you experience 2 or more of these symptoms on a frequent basis, you may be in need of sleep apnoea treatment options.
Causes and treatments of sleep apnea
Narrow throat or airway, due to obesity , excessive fat around the neck are some of the most common cause for sleep apnea. Alcohol consumption, enlarged tonsils , deviated nasal septum and turbinate growths in the nose , all lead to restricted upper airway causing difficulty in breathing leading to higher apnea risks.
To treat apnea , the first thing to do is identify why you have sleep apnea. If its obesity or fat around your neck, then losing weight would be the best thing to do. further investigations like sleep study, airway scan may be needed for further diagnosis. Life style changes and exercises also help a lot.
Sleep physician would give a recommendation bases on the sleep study report regarding management.

Sleep Apnea treatment
Continuous positive airway pressure therapy remains a common management of the sleep apnea. However CPA has its own disadvantages, they are very difficult to wear and travel with. If you have mild to moderate sleep apnoea , then MAS , mandibular advancement splint would be more recommendable. This is a small appliance you wear inside your mouth while sleeping and this keeps your jaw slightly forward, creating more space behind your tongue, so as to allow you to breath better.
We at zen smiles create custom made appliances for your comfort and give you a periodic check up to ensure the appliance is at the optimal function. A follow up sleep study is also essential to record the improvement in your sleep conditions.
