Why dental x-rays are to be done routinely ?

The general rule of thumb is dental Xrays once in 2 years to detect any cavities in early phase. Even when a small decay is noted, sometimes it’s not necessary to treat  immediately. Some dental caries can be reversed when they are in initial phase by using Tooth mousse. In some cases we prefer to keep monitoring, to decide in future whether they need fillings or no.

If you don’t get regular dental check ups, then there is a very high chance, the dentist is going to detect very big cavity needing Root canal treatment, or dental extraction, when the tooth is beyond repair.

Should I see a dentist , even when I have no pain ?

Most of the dental problems, cause pain only after they have reached the nerve in the tooth. In other words, once pain has started, most of the times the treatment required are very aggressive and expensive. For example gum disease, in the initial phase, may be just a bit of bleeding from your gums. If not treated at the time, they progress to severe gum disease, where the tooth may be slightly shaky, and by the time you get pain, its already too late to save the tooth and almost always need the tooth to be removed to alleviate the pain. Poor gum disease in pregnancy has been linked to poor new born health. Advanced gum disease has been linked to heart conditions and diabetes.
