Dental Implants Melbourne
Implant Dentistry
Dental implants are titanium posts, which are inserted inside the bone to act like the root of a tooth. Then a crown is fixed on top of the implant by either cementation or by a screw. Sometimes you may also need bone grafting to be done to insert an implant if there is no sufficient bone. Zen smiles dentists would need a radiograph called 3D scan to plan an implant.
Implant once inserted, may need 3 to 6 months for a final crown to be fixed. During the mean time, you may be given either a fixed or removable temporary tooth to be worn.

Implant surgery is done under local anaesthesia ( Numbing Injection) and hence not painful.
An implant is an independent unit, in other words , not attached to adjacent teeth . Hence any issues with adjacent teeth will not affect the life of the dental implant. you can also floss on either side of the implant, thus helps you to keep the area cleaner.
After a tooth is lost, the bone around that region, usually starts to shrink, as a healing process. Also due to non usage of the bone, the bone also reduces itself over a period of few months to years. Hence its always best to get an implant done, as soon as possible, as early as, on the same day to within few weeks.
Implants can fail over time, if good hygiene and regular check up is not done.
Titanium is presently the most bio compatible metal available. Heart valves and hip joints are all manufactured from titanium.
Zirconia implants have been evolving over the past decade and many designs have changed due to pitfalls in previous designs and failures. Hence some dentists are still cautious in using zirconia implants in their patients.
Implants will usually need as little as 3 to 5 visits, over a period of 3 to 6 months. The optimal healing period of 3 months is required for implant to osseointegrate with bone.
