Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry and Dental Anxiety
If you’re dealing with dental issues but fear visiting the dentist, you’re not alone. Between 9% and 20% of Australians avoid dental appointments due to fear or anxiety. Dental phobia goes beyond regular anxiety—it can leave individuals feeling panic-stricken and terrified. Those who suffer from dental phobia often realize that their fear is irrational, but they find it difficult to overcome.
Untreated, small painless issues can escalate into painful infections. Sedation dentistry helps patients with intense dental anxiety get the care they need without fear. It can be used for both invasive procedures and simple teeth cleaning, depending on the severity of the anxiety.
Stay calm and relaxed through the procedure
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of oral, inhalation, or intravenous medication to help patients remain calm during dental procedures. Although it is sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” this term is not entirely accurate. Patients typically remain awake, except for those undergoing general anesthesia.
The commonly available options are
Conscious sedation- Penthrox (Green whistle) or the laughing gas (happy gas)
Twilight Sedation- Though promoted as sleep dentistry, you are aware of what is going around you
Deep Sedation and General Anesthesia- Deep sedation induces a state where patients are seemingly unconscious but can respond to repeated stimuli. General anesthesia results in complete loss of consciousness. Both procedures are ideally performed in a hospital setting, where patients require assistance with maintaining airway patency and monitoring of cardiac functions.
Using sedation dentistry, the patient stays calm and relaxed through the procedure.

Sedation Dentistry at Holistic Dental Melbourne CBD
Our team aims to address your concerns with patience and understanding. Our dentists will review your medical history and discuss your issues before suggesting solutions for a comfortable and manageable dental experience. We provide clear explanations of procedures, so you are informed at every stage. Combining effective communication with sedation can enhance your visit to our office.
In addition to offering sedation dentistry for managing dental anxiety, we recommend patients:
- Share their concerns
- Focus on your breathing
- Watch what you eat and drink before the procedure, such as sugar and caffeine
- Choose a low-stress appointment time
- Ask lots of questions!
At Zen Smiles, we offer several methods for managing severe dental anxiety.
- To start with, we offer noise cancellation headphones and ceiling mounted Tv to help you relax/entertain, and it also helps to take your mind off the procedure. You will be offered blankets and neck pillows to make you as comfortable as we can.
- Our staff is highly experienced with handling anxious patients and you shall find them to be gentle, calm and reassuring.
For additional help, we offer oral premedication like Valium, usually taken the night before your appointment. It relieves anxiety but may require extra sedation like happy gas during treatment. You cannot drive for 6–12 hours after taking Valium and will need a chaperone.
Penthrox, or Green whistle, is a self-administered medicine that reduces pain and causes mild sedation. It makes people less responsive to excitement and pain but can also cause drowsiness.
Happy Gas (relative analgesia/inhalation sedation) is popular with our dentists. It is affordable, works quickly, has consistent effects, and is easily reversible. Side effects are minimal, and you can drive afterward.
